UPDATE Missing Plane in Henry County Alabama

WSFA.com Montgomery Alabama news.

UPDATE
ABBEVILLE, Ala. – Civil Air Patrol’s Alabama Wing is shifting its focus to the ground as the search for a missing 1942 Piper Cub with two men aboard enters its third day in southeast Alabama near the Georgia state line.
By combining CAP cell phone forensics with witness accounts of the vintage plane’s flight, searchers are concentrating on a 1-square-mile area in Henry County along the Chattahoochee River about 2 miles south of the Walter F. George Dam, said Maj. Harvey Yarborough, who served as CAP’s incident commander for the search Thursday.
“It’s a very micro-focused search at this point,” he said. “It’s going to be a beautiful day; we should have great search weather.”
He described the targeted terrain as open fields interspersed with pine thickets.
The vintage Piper J3C-65, a drab military observation aircraft, was reported missing Tuesday after failing to return to Headland, Alabama, after a leisure flight to Eufaula, Alabama, about 40 miles away. The pilot and his passenger took off in the two-seater at 10 a.m. and had been expected back at 2 p.m. The Air Force Rescue Coordination Center asked the Alabama Wing to participate in the search after local authorities requested assistance.
Maj. Justin Ogden, a CAP cell phone expert, helped narrow the search area Thursday to a 40-square-mile area by analyzing cellular signals from the plane. Those signals ceased about 11 a.m. Central time, Ogden said.
Four ground teams – two each from the Alabama and Georgia wings – will be searching today, as well as three CAP planes from Alabama and two from Georgia, Yarborough said.
The ground teams have “a priority track they’re going to walk, and they’re going to knock door-to-door” in search of witnesses who haven’t yet come forward, he said.
“The pilot appeared to be flying over the river,” Yarborough said. “They ground teams will be looking for a possible place he could have landed if he had trouble.”
He said the pilot never indicated any problems before his and his co-pilot’s cellphones went silent.
CAP ground team members are highly trained, Yarborough said. They train for a year before participating in actual missions, focusing not only on search techniques and detection and interpretation of visual clues but also on investigative interviewing of witnesses.
Maj. David Hester, the Alabama Wing’s assistant director of communications, began serving as CAP incident commander for the mission today.
As of Thursday, the Alabama Wing had made 11 flights in search of the Piper Cub and the two men. In addition, about 25 CAP members have been involved in the mission at that time.

UPDATE 9/19/2014 11:12 A.M.
The search area has been expanded. Still no sign of the missing plane.

UPDATE 9/18/2014 12:03 PM
Divers were delayed this morning because of a broken sonar cable. They're waiting on a replacement cable from Georgia. They're also concerned about hydrilla.
Sheriff Maddox said a dive earlier today in the area where they thought the plane might be turned out to be just trees. The family says they are relieved.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE - 9:50 A.M. - 9/18/14
From a source close to the pilot's family:
Authorities have noted a hit on sonar at Lake Eufaula at the spot where an oil slick was located early on Wednesday. More investigation is planned, and divers may be sent in to search for the missing plan.
Investigators say the sonar hit is 45 feet down, forcing a dive team to wait until Thursday morning to continue the search.

UPDATE 4:31 P.M.
Officials say the size, weight, composition and color of the plane could make it extremely hard to find on land or in water.
If the plane had it crashed in the trees, authorities say it would not leave a large enough clearing to be seen from above. They also say it didn't have enough oil in the tank to leave a slick in water.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE - 2:26 P.M.
Report: There have been two calls from residents on Lake Eufaula, both saying they heard what they believed to be a small plane engine sputtering. The search is now moving to the area on Lake Eufaula near White Oak.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE 10:54 A.M.
Four boats are searching the water near the dam at Eufaula after an oil slick was spotted there.

UPDATE - 10 a.m.
More details have been released about a missing airplane in Henry County. The aircraft is a two-seat, I-4 Piper Cub model.
It is a Green aircraft Marked with a C and a 69 in white. Authorities are asking for anyone who sees debris or unusual sightings to contact police.
The airplane left Headland Airport between 10-10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, en route to Eufaula. Airport officials report the plane had enough fuel for two hours.
Two people were reportedly in the plane. Their identities are not being released at this time.
The pilot was supposed to pick up kids from school, but did not show up. They were reported missing to the Henry County Sheriff's Department around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
The search began on Tuesday night, but was halted due to darkness, before resuming on Wednesday morning.
The plane was last seen between Headland and the Chattahoochee river. It was believed to be flying northeast towards Eufaula.
Airport officials report the plane does not have a black box in the cockpit. There are no hydraulics, no transponder to send back altitude, speed, or other information.
There is no electrical system. The plane was built in the 1930s.
Sea Tow is doing sight scans. Multiple agencies are assisting in the search.

Maddox said authorities suspect the plane may have crashed because it only had two hours of fuel, and it never landed at its destination in Eufaula. He said they’re looking for the plane between Headland and Eufaula.
“We’re looking all over,” Maddox said. “We’ve got airplanes flying grids, which is a systemic search of a certain area.”
Maddox said they’re primarily searching a 64-mile area, which he said included Henry County, the edge of Barbour County to include Lake Eufaula and some of Georgia.
Boats with Sea Tow, an area towing company, also searched Lake Eufaula with sonar equipment after a suspected oil slick or spill was spotted.
Maddox also said multiple agencies are looking for the plane, including helicopters from the Dale County Sheriff’s Office and the Civil Air Patrol. A boat from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources has been searching the Chattahoochee River, according to Maddox.
Officers with the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, the Houston County Sheriff’s Office, the Abbeville Police Department along with the Alabama state troopers were also assisting in the search.

According to a statement from the Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary unit of the U.S. Air Force, the plane reportedly missing was referred to as a Piper Cub model. The statement also called the two-seat plane an older olive drab colored military observation plane.

After 7 years of trying, 5 days of hunting, Rainbow City man snags 11-foot gator on Lake Eufaula

WE WILL BE INTERVIEWING
Blake Gamberi on our show this Tues and Sat
on the Crazy Guy with the Lazy eye
GOING FISHING WITH ED SHOW

You can hear the interview with Blake below on our online broadcast

EUFAULA, Alabama -- Blake Gamberi, of Rainbow City can't stop talking about the alligator he snared last Saturday with the help of his friends.

And, he's got good reason to.
It took the avid hunter and fisherman seven years of applying to secure a tag -- the permit that allows a hunter to kill one alligator during the regulated hunting season - first applying for the Mobile Delta, then the Alabama River and Lake Eufaula.
Gamberi and his three 20-something buddies also took their time, spending five days on Lake Eufaula - two weekends - in order to get a big, mature alligator.
"We could have taken an 8-foot gator (earlier) but we thought we would take our time and have fun," he said.
Gamberi had an experienced gator hunter with him, but they knew Lake Eufaula was going to be a tough hunt with the rules and regulations there. Comparatively speaking, only small sections of the lake could be hunted due to the wildlife refuge and much of the lake being in Georgia.
"Sometimes we would put the boat in at 7:30, wait for 30 minutes, and then get finally tired enough to quit at 5:30 (in the morning)," he said.
After the opening weekend of the hunt, Aug 8-10, Gamberi said the alligator population seemed to thin out.
He said the gators started to "wise up" to what was going on.
"It was almost like they knew the (state) line, and they would stay on the Georgia line," Gamberi said.
Even though one member of his group had killed a gator before, Gamberi said when they started their hunt they were rookies, but by the end after talking to older guys from Eufaula, they were pros.
"We talked to a lot of people and did a lot of research," he said, learning the gators would build their dens on the Georgia side of the lake and then go to the Alabama side to hunt.
On the fourth night of hunting, and losing about seven gators on the line over that period, Gamberi said he and his buddies almost gave up, thinking of calling an alligator guide to help.
But, they decided to give it one more try.
Shortly after hitting the lake on Aug. 16, Gamberi hooked his gator at 9:30 p.m. Thirty minutes later it was dead, and they started the process of hauling it into the boat.
"When we hooked up on it we knew we hooked it, they go straight to the bottom and they just sit there," he said.
But, the rod just stopped and stayed bowed over. At first, they thought they hooked a log since the line wasn't moving. Finally, after 20 minutes, a huge area of the lake started bubbling.

"Then we knew we had a gator," Gamberi said. "About the time we saw the bubbles, that is when we got the big hook with the line in it.
"As soon as (the gator) broke the surface, it went nuts," he said. "It came up and started thrashing. It started death rolling."
Finally, the gator wore itself out, and the hunters were able to snare it in the tail and front foot.
"This time we hooked it perfect," Gamberi said. "Everything just lined up that night for us."
"We were so excited," he added. "Once we got it and it was dispatched we were just freaking out."
Another 15 minutes, and the gator was in the boat.
"It was very gratifying for us," Gamberi said, of their catch.
"We hunted hard," he said. "You can't mess around when you have a gator on the line.

HEAR 911 OPERATOR REFUSE TO SEND HELP FOR BABY TRAPPED IN HOT CAR

Shana Dees was running errands with her 10-month-old son Jack in New Tampa, Florida. Dees left her keys in the car with Jack while returning her shopping cart at a CVS pharmacy. But the son accidentally locked himself in the car, sitting alone in the midst of 96 degree heat. Without her keys, cell phone, or purse, Dees was frantic.

The mother begged a stranger to let her use his cell phone. Dees told the 911 dispatcher that her son was locked in the car in the parking lot.

MOM: "It is so hot outside. I'm really concerned, like I don't think I have time to call AAA before he would suffer heat exhaustion. Can somebody come out and open the door? I don't even know if that is something you guys do.'

The dispatcher's response was shocking.

DISPATCHER: "They won't be able to try to gain access (to the) car unless the child is in some kind of distress and, well, by that point they may just smash your windows," the dispatcher told Dees. The call then went silent. You can listen to both calls below.

It was only until an off-duty police officer called 911 again eight minutes later, where a second dispatcher reported that emergency officials would come to help Dees and her son. But a customer at CVS opted to break the car window with a wrench instead before emergency officials arrived. You can listen to both 911 calls below.

The Tampa Bay Police Department has launched an investigation into the incident, stating that the dispatcher should have kept the mother on the line and will likely be disciplined for his actions. But Dees is still thankful for those who were able to help save Jack.

"I would like to say thank you to them, to the man who let me use his phone, to the officer that was able to get the police out there," Dees told WFTS, ABC affiliate in Tampa.

A manhunt is underway after a man posing as a cab driver allegedly tried to rape a woman in front of her children before attacking the kids.

Police released dramatic surveillance video of the incident, which took place on Aug. 24 just before 3 a.m. in the rear of 7900 Queens Boulevard. They describe it as an attempted criminal sex act. Now, they're hoping a sketch and the video will lead to an arrest.

Stunning raw surveillance video:

According to authorities, the suspect picked up the 26-year-old victim and her three children, ages 1, 3, and 5, on 207th Street in Manhattan.

After driving them to Elmhurst and while in the rear of the location, the driver attempted to sexually assault the victim with the three children still inside the vehicle. The 1-year-old child was sitting in her lap at the time.

While the victim was attempting to get out, the suspect elbowed the 5-year-old in the head and forcibly removed the 3-year-old from the car before fleeing the scene.

The children were taken to Elmhurst Hospital with minor injuries.

James Yang, who witnessed the incident, said, "I heard a voice, heard some sounds but thought it was a fight between a couple."

Sources said the victim was returning to the Pan Am Hotel, and that initially the driver said the fare would be between $40 and $45. The young mother said she had $20. The suspect agreed, but then suddenly pulled down a side street and threatened the mother, saying if she didn't perform a sex act, he would rape her daughters.

The woman refused, sending the suspect into a violent rage, sources said.

Mary Vegas, a mother who lives in the area, said, "It was bad and I believe it shouldn't happen to nobody, it was sad."

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his 40s, wearing a dark blue sweatsuit with white stripes. He had an earring in his right ear and manicured eyebrows, and he spoke Spanish.

Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).

Suspect Attempts to Run from Jackson County Sheriff's Office

On 7-16-14 at 11:03 pm deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office were at an address on Flamingo Lane attempting to serve an arrest warrant.

As they were returning to their patrol vehicles, one officer observed a male seated in the front passenger seat of a car that was parked in the yard.  No one was behind the wheel of the vehicle.

The subject, later identified as Robert L Garrett, quickly ducked down behind the dash in an effort to conceal himself from the officer. They observed a small baggie of marijuana on the floorboard between the Garrett’s legs in plain view.

Garrett was ordered out of the vehicle. As the officers took control of one of his hands he was advised to place his other hand on the roof of the car.

As the officers attempted to handcuff Garrett, he spun around off of the vehicle and caused the officer to fall backwards off his feet and fled on foot.

Garrett was Tarazed by an officer as he was running down Flamingo Lane toward Merritt’s Mill Rd and was taken into custody

During the course of a post-miranda interview, Garrett admitted that the marijuana was his and admitted to attempting to hide from the officers in the car. A small baggie of suspected powder cocaine, several small pieces of suspected crack cocaine, and a small amount of marijuana were found in a cigarette pack adjacent to Garrett.

After being medically cleared by Jackson County Fire Rescue, Garrett was placed  in the Jackson County Correctional Facility to await first appearance in court.
